First, if you know that you plan to eat a specialty restaurant, then see if you can book a spot ahead of time. Cruise lines will usually let you book specialty meal plans ahead of time through your online account. As a bonus for booking early, there is often a discount offered. In general, however, it’s a good idea to expect to spend about $30-$50 per person on a specialty restaurant. Price will vary, of course, but that should put you in the ballpark of most meal charges on the ship.

Finally, it is important to remember that comments from other passengers can be helpful in determining what snacks on a cruise are worth bringing. Some passengers may recommend certain snacks or brands that are not available on board. Cruise lines understand that passengers may have dietary restrictions or health concerns that require special attention. They strive to accommodate these needs to ensure that all passengers have an enjoyable and safe experience on board. If you don’t want to eat in the buffet or public area, you can take food back to your cabin and eat it there. At the buffet, you can make a plate with snacks or even a larger meal.

Soda and Non-Alcoholic Drinks

Most cruise lines have a self serve buffet, while a few offer a full serve buffet. There are some dining venues and specific foods not included on a cruise. By sharing snacks with fellow cruisers, you not only get to enjoy a pleasant social experience but also create lasting memories with new friends.

Passengers with dietary restrictions should alert the cruise line as early as possible. Cruise lines can provide food for vegetarian, vegan, low-/no-fat, low-/no-salt, lactose-intolerant/dairy-free, gluten- or wheat-free (celiac), and other dietary restrictions.

Most ships will also have a buffet restaurant near the pool, where dress is more casual and passengers can help themselves to pre-prepared food. For consecutive sailings, guests of drinking age are allowed to bring one (1) 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne for each individual sailing. Additional bottles will be stored by the ship and delivered, one bottle at a time, to the stateroom on the first day of each new voyage. Guests bringing more than one bottle at the start of the first sailing should have documentation for any consecutive sailings available to share with security. Although it is discouraged to bring food on board, you are allowed to bring your own food snacks or non perishable items if you prefer. There is so much food provided onboard,  bringing your own food isn't really necessary unless you're quite picky or have dietary restrictions.

Remember to review the specific snack policies of the cruise line you are sailing with to ensure that your snacks are within the permitted guidelines. Following these tips will enable you to bring and enjoy your favorite snacks during your cruise, enhancing your overall vacation experience. Guests may also bring non-alcoholic beverages as carry-on items on boarding day. Non-alcoholic beverages may not exceed 12 standard (17 oz.) cans, bottles or cartons per stateroom. Bringing snacks onboard a cruise is very popular among parents of picky eaters. This is especially true for small kids who go through phases of only eating certain foods and refusing everything else.

There are some “official” restrictions on carry-on sizes, but we’ve found them to be less strict than with an airline and rarely enforced. It’s the rule that you can only bring liquids three ounces or less in a one quart plastic bag, with one bag per passenger. In fact, you can think of the rules surrounding your luggage as more similar to traveling to a hotel versus traveling on a flight.

It’s important to note that Carnival doesn’t allow fresh foods on board, meaning you may not get away with bringing fresh fruits and veggies. What’s more, there would be no refrigeration to preserve fresh foods. However, you can still bring healthy, pre-packaged snacks such as crackers, rice cakes, or nuts. While Carnival Cruise Line prohibits a wide variety of foods from being brought onboard their ships, you are allowed to bring a variety of foods.

Just like on land, the restaurants on the cruise ship will vary in both what they serve and how much they charge.
